It's humongously gloomy, sardonic, eeyorish and lugubrious that hippocampuses in Kiri Dam have been killing our well-meaning kinsmen whose sole occupation is fishing. This is glaringly evident with the recent dreadful separate attacks on December 28th, 2025 and on February 20th, 2026 that claimed two lives of industrious fishermen.
As a result of this menace, fishermen contemporarily carry out their activities in fear as they contend with hippocampuses, whose presence now poses great danger and threats to residents and their possessions.
Kiri Dam that is magnanimously blessed with abundant economic assets, has been witnessing ample terror being unleashed by the hippopotamuses on fishermen whenever they are on water.
The deadly attacks by the semi-aquatic animals have left many of our people aggrieved in carrying out activities being sceptical about the ruination the fulminating animals have in stock. They leave their families with high expectations but unsure of realizing them due to the rapacious ways hippocampuses have obstructing their fishing activities.
On this note, I call on the government and the relevant stakeholders to take swift actions in order to curb this ugly trend that's dangerously affecting our riverine community.
I humbly implore the constituted authorities to evaluate the feasibility of relocating aggressive animals to less populated water bodies to reduce human wildlife conflicts, establish dedicated hippo sanctuaries, provide our fishermen with motorized metal boats and launch urgent sensitization programs to educate our fishermen on survival tactics during fishing.
We are now left with two choices: we either manage the rampaging hippocampuses or we should continue burying our kinsmen. We demand an immediate action before another family mourn their father or son.
