The Chairman of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Faisal A. Mohammad, has strongly rejected the Federal Government’s proposed move to remove JAMB as a prerequisite for admission into Colleges of Education across the country.
Speaking in the state capital after a careful review of the proposal, Comrade Faisal expressed concern over the potential impact such a decision could have on the quality of teacher education in Nigeria.
According to him, the teaching profession is a highly sensitive and important field that requires proper knowledge, competence, and strict admission standards. He stressed that maintaining examination processes such as JAMB helps ensure that only qualified and capable candidates are admitted into tertiary institutions.
He warned that removing JAMB as part of the admission process could weaken educational standards and lead to the production of unqualified teachers, thereby increasing quackery within the profession.
Comrade Faisal, who has spent many years advocating for quality education and teachers’ welfare, stated that the current challenges facing the Nigerian education system are already severe due to a shortage of qualified teachers. He noted that lowering admission standards would only worsen the situation.
He further suggested that instead of removing JAMB requirements, the government should introduce additional screening measures or stronger admission procedures that would further improve the quality of students entering Colleges of Education.
According to him, strengthening the admission process is necessary to build a more effective and reliable education sector in Nigeria.
